206-415-xxxx

In case anyone wonders, my phone number is 206-412-xxxx (yes, I am intentionally x’ing it out). Apparently there is someone with the phone number 206-415-xxxx that calls a lot of people… and doesn’t leave messages (i.e. the number shows up on people’s caller IDs).

So for the past few weeks I’ve been getting random phone calls from people (all across the country) calling and telling me that they were returning my call. “Huh?” I ask. “I saw your number on my caller ID… I am returning your call.” “But I didn’t call you…” “Well I have your number on my caller ID…” “What phone number do you have?” “2-0-6-4-1-5-x-x-x-x” “Yeah, that’s not my number. I’m 4-1-2.” “Oh, sorry…”

Seriously — conversations just like that numerous times.

On Tuesday I got a call at 7:30 a.m. (I wake up at 9:30 a.m., so this was quite early). I got a little upset: “Why are you calling me?? I’m 4-1-2!!” “Oh, sorry…” “No, why? How did you mess up the 5 and the 2?? This happens all the time! I want to know what happened?” “Sorry, I’m not sure. Goodbye.”

Argh!!!!

I honestly feel like I’m in a movie and/or there is some conspiracy trying to make me crazy. I have tried to call this 206-415-xxxx number and it is always busy.

My working theory is that this phone number is hooked up to a modem or fax machine that is constantly calling random numbers… then the people see it on their missed calls list and somehow call me back.

The thing is, if the number is on their caller ID, how are they always messing it up and calling me instead of who really called? I understand that 2 and 5 can look somewhat similar on an LED screen… but still!! Argh. This is driving me insane. So I guess the ultimate evil scheme is working? Grrr….

Update: September 26, 2005:
I am turning comments off. This has become nothing more than a “me too!” fest.

  1. Hmm, this smells like consipracy to me. If they were calling you back off their cell phone, they don’t need to redial the number, do they, they would just be able to view the number and press send…right?

  2. Man, I know it’s not funny to you, but that would be one mean, funny prank to pull one someone.

  3. Yeah, it’d be a good prank, and I kinda wish it was a prank. Unfortunately, I’m more of the mindset that this is some crazy way of telemarketers getting around the no call list rule. I.e. rather than calling me to sell me, they trick me into calling them to ask for their sales pitch. Sons of bitches!

  4. If the number appearing on consumers’ caller ID is actually your phone number, then the caller is probably a telemarketer who is engaging in fraud and does not want to be traced, and so, he “spoofs” the caller id (CID) by using voip phone service. Spoofing over IP has turned into big business for fraudsters. The number that appears on consumers’ caller id is not the number of the caller, but is instead just a random fake number used by the fraudster.
Here’s an article in the Register by Kevin Poulsen, a respected writer about internet security issues, about CID spoofing:
    http://www.theregister.co.uk/2004/07/07/hackers_gut_voip/
The number that calls our house is 206-415-9369 and the CID says “LTR”
with voip being the wave of the future, caller ID needs to be fixed. Consumers pay their phone company for the service, and if it does not work as it is supposed to, complain to your phone company–they are the ones letting fraudsters route calls through their networks with fake CID on them.

  5. That’s funny I just got a call from that # 206-415-9327 and when I call it back it is busy. The only reason i was calling it back is because I sent a resume to a recruiter in the 206 area code (I am in another state), just today, and was waiting anxiously for them to call, then I saw a 206 # and was convinced it had to be them. But all I get is a fast busy. So it probably is just a coincidence and a random telemarketer I guess

  6. I got a call from that number today 7-8-05 (206-415-9327) and called it back. It wasn’t a busy signal, it was an error tone. busy signals are slower. fast beeps are error. Could be a payphone, switchboard, etc. It annoyed me since I am having issues with my phone company and my landline is out for 2 weeks. It is being forwarded to my cell in the meantime. aghhh!

  7. RE: 206-415-9327
    NAME ON CALLER ID: GUARDIAN

I get this same call almost everyday. When I see the area code on my caller ID I usually don’t answer it. Today, I finally decide to answer it to see WHY this call keeps coming in so frequently and right after I pickup, I get a dial tone. So, I call back to bitch somebody out and “I” too get a busy signal. Yea, the next time I get this call, I’m gonna dial *57 to trace and report this number to the phone company. If the calls stop, I’ll report back here and let everyone know. I think this may be the solution (unless the CID has been spoofed as posted above)…then we may all be screwed.
Actually “I” WILL find a way to stop this one way or the other…trust me!

    Regards…

  8. I get this 1-206-415-9327 Guardian call every so often. In fact, I did a Google search and found this place. If anyone really figures out what it is. Please email me.

  9. 206 415 8940/206 415 8880/206 415 9369/206 278 9390/206 415 9327 May be from a telemarketer Guardian Enterprises.Google any # and go to payphone site for more info.Always file a complaint with your attorney general.Phone # is from Marathon Communications 800 919 1000 in Seattle.

  10. Well, what a surprise……. I just got the call from Guardian and came in here to look it up.. Can you tell i’m use to the frequent non answered calls… I don’t bother to answer most of them, every once in a while i’ll answer them just to hear the silence… Oh, what a joy. I am grateful for the do not call link posted above… I didn’t think to go there.. Till I read that post…. Thanks all…

  11. … if it’s “evergreen whatever” in Washington State it’s some gov’t sppok operation gone amuck… big brother, time to shut that (**&&! useless cia down…

  12. I got Guardian “9327” again yesterday. I used to get that call a lot last year. Weird thing is, its only when i’m home, never missed when i’m out. Which is especially wierd because i am barely ever home, usually about once a week and some times for about a hour in a day.
I’m gonna look in to it some more, benifits of working for the govt.

  13. i called the number and got a busy signal but instead of hanging up i hit redial again, then again…it started ringing and i got an answering machine. Sounded like a REALLY old lady. Said she has nothing to do with the grant company, its a fraud, if your upset then call the police. Then leave a message. Its weird. 1-206-415-9327 is what i called.

  14. I looked up the number as I was curious as to who was calling me regularly. I have received calls from guardian 1-206-415-9327 today and yesterday at approximately 2:23 pm both days. When I answer there is a pause but I can tell someone is on the other line. After I say hello a couple of times they disconnect the call. I’ve tried calling back and I just get a busy signal. What is peculiar is that I only receive the calls when I am home and I also am rarely home. It’s almost as though they just want the comfort of hearing my voice. I am curious are the rest of you Cat, Angel, etc located in Wisconsin? Perhaps this person knows us all and just wants to hear our voice and wants us to know that he is protecting us like a guardian angel? What do you think?

  15. I have been recieving calls from this # for a few weeks. About a week ago they left a message and said they had been trying to contact me and if I did not get back with them I would be sorry. I was home most of the times when they called, but I live in Alabama so I am not sure how they could tell when people are home across the country. I have tryed to block this # to no avail, but thanks for the idea about the Att. Gen. I will try that.

  16. Been getting this call decided to look it up and this site. Guess i’ll be trying the do not call!

  17. To end the harassment from Guardian, call this number (309) 277-1222. Guardian 206 415 9327 (and other numbers) is a telemarketer for some credit cards and Dish Network. I also called Dish and said I would cancel my service if Guardian called me again.

  18. hmm. Well I live in Oregon and too have recieved the call. I have never seen it on my caller id before and am never home, but the rare time I am they call and when I answered they hung up.

  19. Guess what, this number came up on my display, and when I googled it, your blog was the first hit. It’s a company called “Guardian” – it’s a criminal enterprise that hacks numbers, routes through internet exchanges to hide their location, and runs “sweatt shop” call centers scamming customers.

Attorneys-general have been contacted, but they don’t give a flip. There’s no easy class action money in it, so they just tell you to call the FCC. Yeah, right.

  20. That’s not always true Ian. The A.G.s in PA (717 787 9707) WA (206 464 6948) NC (919 716 6000) MN (800 657 3787) KY (866 696 5380) MO (573 751 3321) etc. are all investigating Guardian Communications (309 277 1222).The FCC (202 418 2861) is also investigating and has cited them in the past.

  21. Got a call, but from a different number than everyone else (slightly). The number I received a call from was 206-415-9247. I googled it with no success, so then I googled just 206-415 and found this website. Same thing happened to me. I checked my cell phone, found out I had a missed call, tried to call it back, and got a busy signal. Weird.

  22. I also am getting calls from Guardian. 206-415-9327. I was looking up the number on google to see who’s it was and got this web site. Guess I’m not the only one receiving these odd phone calls. I have to redial the number on my phone because of the 1 in front. They call all the time. Today I just sat there saying Hello and no one ever said anything. I stayed on the phone for two minutes saying Hello. Nothing. Sometimes when they call they hang up on me. I redialed the number today and also have other times before. It is not a busy signal. The beeping that I hear is the beep when you call a number and it is disconnected. Guardian!! Huh!! Could this be a warning from up above???? SPOOKY

  23. I got here the same way most of you did, through Google. They call me several times a week. As soon as I say hello there is a second or two of silence, then it sounds like someone has picked up an extension (i.e. I hear what’s going on in my own home) then a disconnect.
Hearing my own living room on the phone is spooky.

  24. why are they calling i don’t get it they hang up as soon as i answer the phone. wwas convinced the other halfs girlfriend was calling, sucks to be him, poor guy!! what reason other then to drive me crazy, it’s a very short drive.

  25. oops ps i don’t have caller id i use star 69 and they give me 206-415-9327 ps i am also in wisconsin

  26. I got the call from the 206-415-9247. It does the same thing, out of order signal. I called the FCC and they say they will make sure I don’t get called again.

  27. i live in nyc and got a missed call from 206-415-9247. did a google search, nothing , but managed to find this site. didn’t bother calling back, since i read all the above experiences. most likely i will get a busy sign as well.
has anyone talked to a live person?

  28. I to have received these phone calls but have never answered the phone but my caller ID says “Corporate Office”. I live in Texas. I hate these calls. I signed up on the Do Not Call list but does it stop? NO!

  29. I just got one of these myself (the caller ID said 206-415-9247). It was an automated call in Spanish–something something aprime numero dos and then silence. I just hung up on it…no way am I pressing anything in those conditions! I got here by Googling “206-415”. I guess the next thing is to report it to the FCC.

  30. OK, I just talked to the FCC. Without having the name of the company (which I didn’t have since the call was in Spanish), they can’t do anything about an individual complaint. However, they said that if enough people complain about calls from a particular number, that may trigger an investigation. So, if you land here by Googling 206-415-9247 or any variation on 206-415-xxxx, please call the FCC hotline (1-888-225-5322; press 0 to speak to an operator) and complain!

  31. I got here by google also…my co-worker got this phone call on his cell phone while we were at lunch a day or two ago “etc etc marque uno ahora etc etc”, and we just wrote it off as annoying. I got the phone call (206) 415 9247 today (same spanish message) and googled my way to this page.
    http://www.telcodata.us/telcodata/telco?npa=206&exchange=415
shows that GUARDIAN owns it, as many people here say.

I called the FCC (1-888-225-5322; press 0 to speak to an operator), left a message (and told him it was Guardian) as per Mrs. Coulter’s instructions, and he advised me to do the following:

    1) Call 1 (888) 382-1222 to register my phone on the DO NOT CALL List. He told me to tell my co-worker to do the same on his phone.
    2) If I get the call again, he told me to call the DO NOT CALL List again and press (4) to register a complaint with the phone number.
Anyone who has already regeistered with the DO NOT CALL List that gets calls from this number should do this!
    3) If I get the call again, he told me to also call the FTC and report a “weird telemarketer.”

It would be interesting to know what the message is, but my spanish is a bit rusty (even though I’m in California). Can anyone post a translation?

  32. Telemarketers are required to connect their call to a sales representative within two seconds of the consumer’s greeting. This will reduce the number of “dead air” or hang-up calls you get from telemarketers. These calls result from the use of automatic dialing equipment that sometimes reaches more numbers than there are available sales representatives. In addition, when the telemarketer doesn’t have a representative standing by, a recorded message must play to let you know who’s calling and the number they’re calling from. The law prohibits a recorded sales pitch in a cold call. And to give you time to answer the phone, the telemarketer may not hang up on an unanswered call before 15 seconds or four rings.Report violations to the FTC (877 382 4357)

  33. I got here by google. I’ve been recieving calls from this number for a couple of days now. I never bothered calling back since it seems everyone gets a busy signal. I live in Texas. I will be calling the FCC, what a pain in the butt! It’s like I always say, If I want their business I would have called them!

  34. Wow! So I’m not the only frustrated person when it comes to this 206-415-XXXX number. The number that keeps calling me is: 206-415-9365, with the name of Evergreen. They called three times in a row within a 2 minute time frame and never left a message. I think it’s hooked up to some “disturb people” machine! Arrrgh!!! I’m from Fredericksburg, Virginia, btw.

  35. I am near Fredericksburg VA as well and (206) 415-8940 with a “Card Services” id keeps calling but never leaves a message or answers the phone.

  36. I TO GOT A PHONE CALL TODAY ON MY CELL FROM 206-415-9247, WHEN I ANSWERED THE CALL IT WAS SOMEONE SPEAKING IN SPANISH, SOUNDED LIKE A RECORDING. MY SPANISH SUCKS, SO I HAVE NO IDEA WHAT HE WAS SAYING. BUT THIS #$%#$%@#$%# GOT TO STOP!!!

    GOD BLESS AMERICA!!

  37. I have been getting these calls from 206-415-9365 over the past few days. I have caller id so i don’t answer and they never leave a message. It looks like they have different numbers they call from based on what region of the country they are calling into. I live just west of richmond,va. I got these calls about a year ago too, and after awhile, they stopped calling.

  38. Hi everyone. I too have been getting calls from 206-415-9327 and would never answer them. Today I just got a call from 206-278-9425. I did not answer because fo the “206” area code. I just assumed it was the same people; however, the name portion of CID said “DWC” instead of “Services, Inc.” like with the 9327 number. Do any of you think these are the same people/company/ring?

  39. Got here just like everyone else. Google. Been getting a call from 206-415-9247 for weeks. Tried answering, nothing. Tried calling back, busy. They called today about an hour ago and I got a voice mail. It was in spanish. I just went and got a guy that works for me that speaks spanish and he says it says “Only press one now”.

  40. Hey, thanks for setting this site up.
Just minutes ago I got the call from 206-415-9247. I did not answer, as it was on my cell phone, and only people I know call me on that #. I googled the area code, and it came up as Seattle, Washinton. Since I do not know anyone there, I did not attempt to call back, but instead googled the area code and exchange, and came up with this site. I will also be calling the FCC following the previous poster(s) directions.
Thanks for all the info guys!

  41. I am a vendor that has clients complaining of getting such calls from the 206.415.9247 number & getting the Spanish recording. for me to register all of my numbers (over 50,000 in Manhattan) would take me a year. Has anyone here had to register blocks of numbers or found a way to go to the vendor to stop these calls?
