I Am No Longer An Atheist

Anyone wanna guess what I now consider myself?

Okay, fine. I still don’t believe in any sort of god or religion or have any ambiguous feelings about either. In a way, I have upgraded from being an atheist to an anti-theist!

What does this mean? To me, an atheist is someone who just doesn’t believe in the existence of god. After talking to a bunch of friends (religious and atheist), I realized that not only do I not believe in god, but I actually think believe in god and/or religion is bad and I am against it.

Sometime in the future I’ll probably elaborate on why I feel this way. It’s more than “religion has caused a lot of bad things to happen” and “science is better than religion”-type arguments, I assure you.

(And yes, I was introduced to this term via Christopher Hitchens and his book [which I recently read] God is not Great: How Religion Poisons Everything. And no, I do not think the book brainwashed me. If anything, it gave me a better vocabulary to explain how I feel about religion.)

Michelle Pfeiffer as Catwoman in Batman Returns
The best part of the Catwoman DVD that I rented the other day was the special feature titled “The Many Faces of Catwoman.”

As for the movie itself… believe the reviews. It sucked way more than I expected. I honestly assumed all of the negativity came from obsessed comic fans who felt the movie wasn’t true to the original vision of Catwoman or too campy or too serious or who knows what. For the record, I actually didn’t hate Batman Forever or even Batman & Robin and figured that similar criticism was aimed at all three movies. That certainly wasn’t the case. Catwoman just plain sucked. Read any of the reviews for Catwoman for more information on that. (I guess I could be thankful that reading about the film on Wiki introduced me to the Films Considered the Worst Ever page.)

But Catwoman the film aside, “The Many Faces of Catwoman” was great. The documentary basically goes through every actress who played Catwoman (Julie Newmar, Lee Meriwether, Eartha Kitt, Adrienne Barbeau [voice of Catwoman from Batman: The Animated Series], Michelle Pfeiffer, and Halle Berry) and features original interviews with all but Pfeiffer. It also goes into the history of Catwoman from a comic book perspective and traces her evolution (apparently no comic book character has changed her look so many times).

While the documentary wasn’t groundbreaking or life-changing, it did make the stupid DVD worthwhile and if you happen to accidently rent it or are forced to or who knows what, at least check it out so you get some good out of the DVD.

Frankie Valli

For some reason Frankie Valli seems to be the guy right now.

A while back Pilooski remixed “Beggin'” and spawned this awesome video:

Then I saw that Simian Mobile Disco mentioned his song “The Night” as one of their current faves. And pretty much immediately after I saw that I noticed that Leam or Rosebud had already remixed the song!

And if you check out searches for “valli” on HypeMachine there is quite a bit.

I’ll admit, I think this is awesome. I’ve loved The Four Seasons since I was a little kid. Songs like “Let’s Hang On” and “Sherry” and “Working My Way Back To You” still have more of an emotional effect on me than I would expect.

Let’s hope that we see some more Franki Valli and Four Seasons remixes coming soon.

Breaking Up With The Klaxons?

Last night I saw the Klaxons for the second time.

The first show was fun but very short. I convinced two of my best friends to come with, and they were not very impressed. When the Klaxons rolled in to town again (last night) neither of them were interested in seeing them again.

Now I sort of wish I didn’t see them again, too.

The thing is, I absolutely love their album Myths of the Near Future and I love the remixes of their songs even more — and therein lies the problem, I think. My first experiences with the Klaxons were via the remixes that Van She (for “Gravity’s Rainbow”), Digitalism (for “Atlantis to Interzone”), and Simian Mobile Disco (for “Magick”) did for the Klaxons.

From the begining, for me, Klaxons were more of an electronic/dance band… but in reality, they are more of a pop/punk band. When you are expecting beeps and bleeps and glitches and loops, guitars and drums are somewhat jarring.

This really makes me sad since I’ve been saying since late 2006 that I thought the Klaxons were going to be The Best Band of 2007. They still might be, but probably not for me…

The Problem

“They are trying to make us more afraid of fixing the problem than the problem itself.”

Rachel Maddow said this tonight on Countdown about America’s health care problem. While it can certainly be applied to health care, I think this is basically the conservative position against almost anything progressive. It’s the best way to maintain the status quo. I think understanding this can make it a lot easier to achieve progress.

Darwin’s Nightmare

darwins-nightmare.jpg
One of the ways in which Darwin’s work has been (mis?)interpreted is that the stonger/better species will evolve while the lesser/weaker species will go extinct (i.e. natural selection). This idea has been somewhat perverted and combined with economic theory to come up with the whole survival of the fittest justification that has been used to especially stigmatize and deny help for poor and oppressed people around the world throughout history. Basically, survival of the fittest says that one’s surroundings and external forces have little or no effect on one’s success in life and that one’s perservarane and hard work is what gets them ahead and out of trouble.

The documentary Darwin’s Nightmare takes an extreme case of Darwin’s theory of natrual selection and explores the way it affects not just the surviving species, but the entire world (in a way).

There are too many details for me to really go into the documentary in-depth, but what I really liked about it was that the documentary didn’t really place any “blame” for the current situation in Tanzania. Some might fault the documentary for this — what would the point be without telling us what we can do? But I usually feel that understanding the complexity of an issue is much more important than finding a quick, simple solution.

Bruce + Diddy

bruce-and-diddy.jpg
Ever since I first saw Bruce Willis and Diddy show up at some MTV award show a few years ago together, I can’t help but laugh every time I see or hear about one or the other.

With Bruce Willis’s Live Free Or Die Hard opening, he’s all over the place now and it just cracks me up to know that him and Diddy (of all people) are such great friends. I would love to be a fly on the wall when they hang out and hear about what they talk about, what they have in common, etc.

Also, I was thinking of Bruce Willis because I’m watching Ocean’s 12 right now and he’s in my favorite scene where the movie plays with Julia Roberts the actress playing Tess the character playing Julia Roberts the actress.

From The Archives

A while ago one of my friends said that he was intrigued by the posts that I had in draft but hadn’t published. Unfortunately, it’s not like I was hiding them because they were so great or juicy, but instead they remained in draft because I was too lazy to publish them.

In a bit of housekeeping, however, I’ve decided to post what I have since most of them are way too old to even try to finish now (the thoughts I had at the time I started writing them are long gone). So enjoy the posts and feel free to comment or inspire me to maybe finish writing them of them…
