Well duh! But at least Entertainment Weekly finally figured it out!! In the August 5, 2005 issue they have a “Summer’s Must-See Movies” feature which included a blurb about 2046.

I love that they commended Zhang Ziyi on her acting ability and noted made a connection between the film’s title and Hong Kong history.
