{"id":254,"date":"2007-06-02T16:56:08","date_gmt":"2007-06-02T23:56:08","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/thecompany.net\/jason\/posts\/2007\/pirates-of-the-ship-of-fools\/"},"modified":"2007-06-02T16:56:08","modified_gmt":"2007-06-02T23:56:08","slug":"pirates-of-the-ship-of-fools","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/thecompany.net\/jason\/posts\/2007\/pirates-of-the-ship-of-fools\/","title":{"rendered":"Pirates of the Ship of Fools"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/thecompany.net\/jason\/files\/ship-of-fools.jpg\" width=\"500\" height=\"305\" alt=\"The ship of fools, depicted in a 1549 German woodcut\" title=\"The ship of fools, depicted in a 1549 German woodcut\" class=\"aligncenter\"\/><br \/>\nI cannot help but think of <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Ship_of_fools\">the ship of fools<\/a> (which I first learned about while reading <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Michel_Foucault\">Foucault<\/a>&#8216;s <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Madness_and_Civilization\"><i>Madness and Civilization<\/i><\/a>) while watching <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Pirates_of_the_Caribbean_films\"><i>Pirates of the Caribbean<\/i><\/a> &#8212; especially the second one, <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Pirates_of_the_Caribbean:_Dead_Man%27s_Chest\"><i>Dead Man&#8217;s Chest<\/i><\/a> when they go to the Tortuga Port to find the &#8220;99 souls&#8221; to give to Davy Jones.<\/p>\n<p>I think <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Jack_Sparrow\">Captain Jack Sparow<\/a> is the perfect example of a fool on a ship without any idea what he&#8217;s doing or where he&#8217;s going. I&#8217;m surprised I didn&#8217;t make the connection earlier. The way <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Johnny_Depp\">Johnny Depp<\/a> plays the character totally adds to the idea of it, too.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>I cannot help but think of the ship of fools (which I first learned about while reading Foucault&#8216;s Madness and Civilization) while watching Pirates of the Caribbean &#8212; especially the second one, Dead Man&#8217;s Chest when they go to the Tortuga Port to find the &#8220;99 souls&#8221; to give to Davy Jones.
