{"id":147,"date":"2005-10-12T17:54:33","date_gmt":"2005-10-13T00:54:33","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/thecompany.net\/jason\/posts\/2005\/nexus-of-politics-and-terror\/"},"modified":"2009-08-22T10:16:51","modified_gmt":"2009-08-22T17:16:51","slug":"nexus-of-politics-and-terror","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/thecompany.net\/jason\/posts\/2005\/nexus-of-politics-and-terror\/","title":{"rendered":"&#8220;Nexus of Politics and Terror&#8221;"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>It was great to see that <a href=\"http:\/\/www.msnbc.msn.com\/id\/3036677\/\">Countdown with Keith Olberman<\/a> had a segment called <a href=\"http:\/\/www.msnbc.msn.com\/id\/9665308\/#051012a\">&#8220;The Nexus of Politics and Terror&#8221;<\/a> tonight that went over 10 (though they have 13 on the web site) situations where bad news about the Bush administration was followed by a change in the terror alert.<\/p>\n<p>I realize that Olberman isn&#8217;t the first to make this connection (<a href=\"http:\/\/juliusblog.blogspot.com\/\">JuliusBlog<\/a>&#8216;s <a href=\"http:\/\/img70.imageshack.us\/img70\/9281\/aproval_vs_alert_chart_NEW.gif\">&#8220;Timeline of Terror Alerts&#8221;<\/a> is the most cited, though I prefer his <a href=\"http:\/\/img70.imageshack.us\/my.php?loc=img70&#038;image=aproval_vs_alert_chart_NEW.gif\">chart showing Bush&#8217;s approval ratings and terror alerts<\/a>), but Olberman&#8217;s show appeared on a major cable news network (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.msnbc.com\">MSNBC<\/a>), which makes it more likely to be seen by the masses.<\/p>\n<p>I know that one could make the argument that all of this is just a matter of coincidence and that correlation does not imply causation, but it does raise the question: Is the Bush administration using terror level alerts to distract the public? As Olberman joked, if someone felt so inclined it would probably be possible to create a list connecting Wal-Mart openings with terror alerts, but with those two items there is no relation (well&#8230;) &#8212; but the terror alerts do help the Bush administration and make people convinced that they are actually doing something and that they should still be afraid.<\/p>\n<p>I, for one, am convinced that there is something sneaky going on.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>It was great to see that Countdown with Keith Olberman had a segment called &#8220;The Nexus of Politics and Terror&#8221; tonight that went over 10 (though they have 13 on the web site) situations where bad news about the Bush administration was followed by a change in the terror alert.
